Student Memorial Rededication
Description
Join family, friends, neighbors, community leaders and Rotarians at the Student Memorial Rededication Event (Huff N Puff trailhead). All are welcome to join in a Rededication ceremony recognizing local students who passed away while in grades 6 – 12, prior to completing their primary or secondary schooling. Installation of two new granite benches, updates and renovations to the existing memorial, and 24 newly engraved student names will be recognized during the Rededication Event.
The Student Memorial was originally established at the Huff N Puff trailhead in 1999 as Abe Gardner’s Eagle Scout project. Now, 25 years later, as a local Rotarian in partnership with the Shelton Rotary Club, City of Shelton, Shelton School District, and numerous local volunteers and donors, Abe is at the center of the current effort to update the Memorial, has connected personally with the families of students to be recognized, and will be present at the Rededication Event.
The project has received and continues to receive incredible support. An ambitious timeline and fundraising goal was established this past Spring, and by mid-August the baseline fundraising goal was met. This enabled the Shelton Rotary Club to move forward with purchase of the granite benches and a commitment to complete engraving and installation by Fall 2024. The fundraising effort continues, and will provide for continued updating, engraving and maintenance –as well as potential future installation of a third granite bench.
Over a year ago, the Shelton Rotary Club formally adopted the Huff N Puff through the City of Shelton’s “Adopt-A-Park” program. Since that time, Club members have focused on trail maintenance efforts and promotion of use and enjoyment of this community asset. The updated Student Memorial and new granite benches at the trailhead will provide an ideal setting to pause and reflect.
